“The Monkey Mind Encounters”
A workshop with Platform-K and Lisi Estaras / 30th & 31st March, 2018

Within the framework of its 26th edition and in parallel with its performance program, LUCKY TRIMMER invites dancers, both abled and disabled, to dance together in a free workshop. “Dance is for everyone!” is at the heart of this workshop that aims to demonstrate that everyone, regardless of disabilities, benefits from dancing.

The opportunity to work with people with Down Syndrome (Platform-k, Ghent) and professional dancers led Lisi Estaras to create the piece Monkey Mind in 2016. As part of her choreographic research, Lisi looks for how to transform the monkey mind (the non-stop conversation inside your head, the jumping from thought to thought, from one feeling to another, like a monkey from tree to tree) into movement and physical language by identifying specific behaviour that creates common ground for encounters. For this LUCKY occasion, Lisi Estaras, together with dancers Fernando Amado and Hanna Bekemans, will share their experience in a workshop format. Lisi is fascinated by people’s ability to communicate without language despite personal complexities or socio-cultural conditioning and their persistent search for intimacy, understanding and empathy using a shared physical vocabulary.

About Platform-K and Lisi Estaras
Platform-K is the only Belgian organisation that provides professional dance training for people with mental disabilities. The year long program helps them develop dance skills and build their identity as semi-professional dancers. Alongside these educational activities, Platform-K creates inclusive dance performances that bring abled and disabled dancers together. Through creative collaboration with choreographers, Platform-K aspires to give more visibility to dancers with a disability and aims to change the identification of disability as an inability to one synonymous with strength and possibilities.

Lisi Estaras studied dance in Cordoba, Argentina and in Jerusalem at the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance. Later, she danced with the Batsheva Ensemble in Tel Aviv and joined Les Ballets C de la B in 1997 (Iets op Bach, Wolf, vsprs, pitié!, C(H)ŒURS and tauberbach by Alain Platel; Tempus Fugit by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui). Through the years Lisi developed her own work. She created and performed in Bartime (Campo, Ghent), Cocina Erotica and No Wonder with Constanza Macras (Schaubuhnne, Berlin), Leche (Passerelle, Kortrijk) and A distancia (Teatro Real, Cordoba, Argentina). At Les Ballets C de la B, she directed Patchagonia, Bolero, The Gaza Monologues, primero-erscht and Dans Dans. Together with Serge Aimé Coulibaly she created GLOED, a dance performance for over 50 years-old people. With partner in crime Sara Vanderieck she made Monkey Mind and When I look at a strawberry, I think of a tongue. Lisi is a member of the pedagogic project of les ballets C de la B giving workshops and masterclasses in Belgium and internationally.
