HOW IT WORKS

ELIGIBILITY

LUCKY TRIMMER accepts applications from anyone and anywhere during our open call period. Show us your solos, your duets, bring your whole dance crew. The only requirements are that

  • you are the choreographer or owners of the rights to the piece,
  • the piece is not a work in progress,
  • you do not require extensive technical support,
  • and the piece is TEN minutes or less

Other than that, anything goes. You can be from Berlin or Bali. You can be a newbie or a professional. You can be a first time LUCKY TRIMMER applicant or be applying for the hundredth time. Whether your first attempts were successful or not. Keep on trying. You might get LUCKY!

HOW TO APPLY

Click on the apply section of our website and fill out the application form (in English or German). We only consider complete applications submitted ON TIME. So don’t forget to submit the application form, a video of your piece AND the 15€ application fee. We understand that not everything is black and white. So please email us at mail@luckytrimmer.com if you are unable to fulfill any of these requirements and we’ll try to help you out.

Receipt of your application will be acknowledged by email. The email is generated automatically. So if you don’t receive an email upon completion of your submission (and payment of the application fee), please contact us at mail@luckytrimmer.com. Please note that your application cannot be considered until the 15€ LUCKY application fee has successfully been transferred to LUCKY TRIMMER’s account.

The Video

Please provide us with full-length videos of your piece. We DO NOT want promotional videos, trailers, or videos of a piece you don’t intend to perform. Please DO NOT submit videos longer than 10 minutes or a heavily edited rough-cut of your piece.

You’d really make things easier for everyone if you could upload your video to Vimeo or another online video sharing service. Due to copyright regulations, videos uploaded to YouTube are often not viewable in Germany. We do not accept videos from Dropbox or WeTransfer. Uploading videos online is also easy, cheap, and environmentally friendly.

The Application Fee

There is a NON-REFUNDABLE application fee of 15€ for each application. LUCKY TRIMMER does not receive any public funding. Our non-profit organization relies exclusively on a production team of volunteers and our network of private sponsors.

Your application fee is a significant contribution towards the LUCKY TRIMMER format. It ensures that we remain an influential platform for the international dance and performance scene. Your application fee is exclusively used to put on our LUCKY TRIMMER shows. Our volunteers are not lining their pockets with your fees. Trust us! Since LUCKY TRIMMER does not receive public funding it is our volunteers, private sponsors, and people like you who keep the dream alive!

SELECTION PROCESS

Our LUCKY curatorial team has the happy task of reviewing your work. The team is composed of dance lovers with widely varied backgrounds in the arts, medicine, graphic design, and more. After each team member has independently viewed the videos and created a short list, the team convenes in closed session to select 7 to 8 pieces and put together a dazzling production for the Tanz Performance Serie in Berlin. Our decision is final and we are not able to offer any explanations for why your piece was not selected. All applicants will be notified about the final selection of our curatorial team by email.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

The Tanz Performance Serie takes place during the long Easter weekend each year (from Thursday until Sunday) and is held in Berlin at the SOPHIENSAELE theater. Invited artists are required to perform three times and must take part in a short technical rehearsal as well as a dress rehearsal prior to the performances. Participants must be available for all rehearsals and performances over the three-day festival.

LUCKY TRIMMER will offer total compensation of 500€ per piece. Accommodation (shared double occupancy) as well as a small financial contribution towards travel expenses might be provided depending on the available budget. Catering is provided in the dressing room as well as after the premiere. LUCKY TRIMMER also works with its network of co-production partners and collaborators to provide featured artists with additional performance opportunities.

RECORDINGS AND AUDIOVISUAL RIGHTS

If your piece is selected, you must agree to provide LUCKY TRIMMER with any and all relevant information, and existing materials related to your piece free of copyright. This allows us to communicate with our adoring fans about upcoming shows and promote our events to the media, our partners, and the public at large.

LUCKY TRIMMER will record, photograph, and otherwise preserve participants’ performances. The resulting films and/or documentary records may be used by the organizers and their partners without copyright restrictions for their own communications and promotional purposes related to LUCKY TRIMMER activities.

Within the framework of the Tanz Performance Serie, participants authorize the organizers to freely use any or all parts of the video footage submitted for the initial selection. This is exclusively for the purposes of promoting the event.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Performances take place in the Festsaal of the SOPHIENSAELE theater. The Festsaal is approximately 480 square meters (24x20m) and 8.60m high. It is equipped with a movable grandstand and holds a maximum of 250 people. The stage is about 10x10m and is equipped with a black dance floor.

Participants will only have 1 hour or less to tech and space their piece on stage so they must keep lighting and technical specifications simple. Installation and dismantling of sets can take no longer than 5 minutes. A sound system will be available to transmit recorded soundtracks onstage and in the auditorium (sound should preferably be provided as digital audio files on a USB stick or sent by electronic transfer to LUCKY TRIMMER prior to the performance). Live music requirements will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
